Where Is Your Temporary Internet Files Folder Located?

Your temporary internet files folder is located in a different location depending on the Operating system and version you are using:

  • If you have Windows Vista as your OS then Temporary Internet Files folder is placed in the following locations (be aware that they can be on other drive instead of C):
    C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\
    C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Important!

You need to change the settings of Windows Explorer to show hidden files (including the protected system files) in order to access temporary internet files folders.

  • If you use Windows XP or Windows 2000 then Temporary Internet Files folder is placed in this location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

If you have only one user account on Windows XP or Windows 2000 then replace <username> with Administrator to get the path of the Temporary Internet Files folder.

  • If you use Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows Me or Windows NT  then Temporary Internet Files are in these locations:
    C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\
    C:\Windows\Profiles\<UserName>\Temporary Internet Files\

Note that on your computer the Windows directory may not be C:\Windows but some other directory.

It’s important to know how to access these files because if you want to delete your history you will need to be able to locate the folder. Also if you have forgotten a site you like you can go into this folder and find all your cached pages, which means you will be able to find sites you forgot to bookmark. You can find you’re folder in the local drive for most cases. It is important that you delete these files regularly and make sure you always update the folder. A lot of intruders try accessing these files for marketing campaigns, although this is not aloud by law you still will find millions of intruders online trying things to gain access to your private files.

The reason so many intruders are interested in your cached files is because they can sell them off to major retail stores who use them for targeted ads. It is big money for some people and that is why you see so many other people trying it out. Now just to be on the safe side you could purchase a program to delete all your cached files plus other things, this is great for having solid security and privacy. If you can’t find your temp file you can delete it in the browser but remember it’s important to be able to access this for your own privacy.
